Day33 Colouring the Priestess

Coloured in photoshop the Luna Priestess sketch. The theory came back pretty fast - it is quite a simple treatment, but I like it as my first for a looooong time.
It is a little overdone in places - I might tidy up another night. She certainly has a skinny waist and some of the pencil work is kinda rough when you zoom-in. I might try and 'ink' it or play with editing the sketch layers to fix that up a little (areas like her chin maybe).

I will have to try my tablet for this next time round and try some more effects particularly on the fabric and lighting side.

Read a nice article on Volumetric lighting in the ImagineFX mag by Henning Ludvigsen. The bits about the transparency of skin is very nice. I even say some beautiful volumetric lighting coming into the airport tunnel today - sweet. I will have to give it a try next.

Day32 CSP and such

It seems that the only degree program (masters) in this field that has Commonwealth Supported places (old HECS) is the Digital Media Masters at COFA !!
The converts a very expensive exercise into much more manageable $$$.
Obviously this program will be mac and maya-centric - but perhaps that viewpoint will add value to what I get.

Add some more SL discussion and WoWing to the mix for the day.

Day31 Online

Diving into the online CGart worlds today.
There is a nice little piece in my ImagineFX mag on entering online competitions at sites like: (beware)
The work of people displayed on these sites is inspiring, it can all be done. I need to develop some serious software skills and combine that with some education on the fundamentals of imagery, animation, characterisation, mood and more. It also shows that I have a looong way to go - this is no 5 minute journey.

I will start looking now at not only courses in digital media and related areas, but also taking some serious time off to dedicate enough time and momentum to the task. Maybe halftime, though that will leave BECU running on empty a little.

WoW - should I abandon it, or use it as part of the whole? Being a part of this type of game/online community/3D world of the quality that Blizzard have produced is of significant value. Being able to interact with friends in the environment I hope to be a part of at the production side has value.
With that - more Plaguelands for me!

Watched some of the creation doco on the Final Fantasy DVD, it re-emphasises the great amount of work, thought and energy that goes into something like this. There is definative skill in creating the magic of the whole while engine builds all the myriad of details and parts.
I made a few prelim sketches for a cute animation that might form part of a showreel. A little person playing before looking at the camera - getting a freight and having all their freckles fall off :-)

Day30 FF & more

Watched the Final Fantasy - Spirits within movie - havent watched it for a while. It is starting to show its age now, but is still a triumph. The people are great for what they are, while the rest is simply awesome. The ships, cities, spirits, dreams, equipment, effects combined with the audio work makes for a great experience.
Watched an ep of Tripping the Rift - well the animation is very basic shall we say. It is still consistent and matches pretty well the style of the show. The eye is (as would be expected) drawn to 6. Then an ep of Battlestar Galactica, the effects work is all out in space, but what there was was slick and very watchable. It was primarily short little bursts of action, the main sequence was Apollo's manouvering through the conveyor which was ok.

Did some more sketching, started on my new A4 pad while continuing in the A5 one as well. I like my little Cylon sketch (redesign) - Its a little 2D'ish but I like it.

voted for the current round of RRot Idol, I am impressed how quickly these folk can pull together a couple of images of this quality.
WoWing at 57 into the Plaguelands.

Day29 Discussions and gaming

Showed off Second Life and HL2 to BZ, JP, PM and Deano today. In my opinion there just isnt enough value in what SL can offer (bit laggy, unresponsive, full of people not actually doing anything etc). It has the feel of a great first attempt at something like this - it just feels like it needs some polish.
I like the potential of HL2 to explore the finer elements of Architecture and spaces, plus its better linkage to our other tools like 3DsMax, Solidoworks and such.

Back into WoW today after a few days of absence (57 now, almost able to head for the old homeworld) - it is interesting to see (for me) how much more engaging it is than SL (even on the chat side). It has a much more visibly active community and economy than I have seen in SL where the ecomony is more overtly visible.

Day28 Mags & Sketches

Got a handful of sketches done today. The evolution of the mermaid ideas have gone further with the "ready for what?" sketches which show enough promise to evolve into my first full image.

Read lots from 2 new mags: 3D World 86 and ImagineFX xmas2006. I am continually amazed at the great work being produxed by so many pieces of software. This field is far from dominated by even a few apps - it is a broad field indeed. The quality of hte work in stills can come from the cheapest of software, once one gets to know a chosen suite of apps they can be wielded to produce super results even if they arent the industries top apps.
